Adding a Jisc service to your desktop – via Chrome
When adding a service to your desktop and using a Chrome browser:
- Select the menu (3 dots) button in the top right
- Navigate to More tools
- Select Create shortcut…
- A pop up window will appear asking you to name the shortcut, it will be pre-filled with the name of the website
- Once you have named it, select the Create button
- The shortcut will now appear on your desktop with a large Jisc icon
- Double clicking this will take you to the website
- Dragging this shortcut to the start bar will pin it there for quick access
Adding a Jisc service to your desktop – via a Windows shortcut
A manual approach to creating shortcuts, without depending on browser options is to create a shortcut from scratch.
- Right click on the desktop or in the explorer view of a folder
- Navigate to New
- Then select Short cut
- A window will open asking: What item would you like to create a shortcut for?
- Enter the web address of the service in the input box under the instruction to Type the location of the item
- Then select Next
- Then you will have a screen asking What would you like to name the shortcut?
- Enter the name of the service
- Then click Finish
- A shortcut with the Jisc icon and the name you allocated will appear in the location.
- Double clicking this will take you to the website.
- Dragging this shortcut to the start bar will pin it there for quick access.
Adding a Jisc service site to your desktop – via IE explorer
When adding a service to your desktop and using an internet explorer browser:
- Select the settings cog button in the top right
- Select Add site to Apps
A pop-up window will appear checking the details for the confirmation of the web address to save
You might want to add /Resources/ to the end of the web address if you want the link to go straight to the resources listing.
The confirmed web address will then open in a browser window
If you click on your Windows Start button or tap the Windows key on your keyboard the start menu will appear, if you scroll down you will see that the shortcut to the site has been added to your list of applications and programs.
If you want a quick access tile for your start menu, then click and drag the shortcut over to the tile section on the right and release it in the position you like.
Alternatively if you want it pinned to your task bar then you can then click and drag the shortcut over to the task bar on the bottom and release it in the position you like.
Adding a Jisc service site to your desktop – via Edge browser
In Edge browser the options to pin to Start and Start taskbar are very easy.
Navigate to via the menu ( 3 dots) button in the top right.
- You have the option to Pin this page to taskbar
- Under the More tools menu you have the option to Pin this page to start
The shortcuts will appear in the taskbar or start menu.
Adding a Jisc service site to your phone – via Android browsers
When adding a service to your mobile or tablet using a mobile or chrome browser:
- Select the menu ( 3 dots ) button in the top right
- Select the option to Add to Home screen
A pop up will appear asking what you would like it to be labelled as, it will be auto-filled with the name of the site.
The pop up will then confirm that you want add it to your home-screen and show you a preview. You can either
- Touch and hold a selection on the preview and it will take you to the home screen to decide where to position and release it
- Or you can select Add and it will put the shortcut on one of your home-screens that has space available.
